There are many who think that manual labour is a mean and abject profession. The educated people specially suffer from this complex. They always in search of such jobs where there is no manual work. They do not realize that labour is an honourable thing and not something to be ashamed. This is very unfortunate for them as it is greatest hurdle in their progress.
We must remember that those if people whom we call labourers refuse to work our civilization would come to stand still. If coolies, washer man, carpenters and hundreds of others did not work our lives would be impossible. They earn their bread by sweat of their on brow and that is the dignity of worker. National development is not possible without hard work. No country can make progress unless its workers are efficient and hard working. They can work hard only if they are respected and honoured. Workers in all advanced countries enjoy respect, social security benefits and very good working conditions.
In the past the working class is expoilted by the landlords, aristocrats and Brahmans. Shudars are the worst example of exploitation. But the conditions are almost change in modern world. No civilized society can look down upon the working class. In the advanced countries high ranking officials and billionaires feel no shame in doing manual work.
All great religions of the world have emphasized the dignity of labour. Most of the great religious leaders used to do their work with their own hand. They were never ashamed of manual work. They considered the poorest labourers as their friends. It is a famous of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.W) “ A manual worker is friend of God”. Islam preaches against class distinction. According to Islam there no difference between a house servant and a master. Our Holy Prophet (S.A.W.W) and His great caliphs have set the true examples of dignity of labour. The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.W) carried bricks for the construction of mosque. He even mended His own worn out shoes.
In certain backward and uneducated countries the dignity of labour has not yet been recognized. But they must aware of the fact that they can not make progress unless they turn to manual work. Working in factories, shops, business concerns and construction companies is not considered below dignity now. In the present age no country can make progress unless it encourages its manual work. Industrial and commercial revolution in European countries brought a change in the attitudeof people towards manual labour.
If we want to stand in the row of developed countries we should realize the dignity of labour. We should not look down upon the working classes. We should not hate to earn our living through any physical labour.
